Hi, my name is Dyani White Hawk, and I'm here to talk about the Speaking to Relatives exhibition.
Along with pushing back against imposed hierarchies and how those hierarchies have honored certain artistic materials and the peoples associated with them and devalued, or excluded other artistic materials and the peoples associated with them, the work also aims to push back against the way that we see and understand that human attributes and the ways that those are also associated with specific people and lives. The title, Quiet Strength and the entire series is meant to honor these artistic contributions of women to the history of abstraction.
So, it's specifically paying tribute to Lakota women and their contributions to artistic history because that's central to entry points into art making, into how I've been raised and in who I understand myself to be. It also is meant to pay tribute to Indigenous women at large and their contributions to abstraction, to native people at large their contributions to abstraction, and to women and their contributions to abstraction, because all of those groups have been undervalued in the way that the narratives have been written and taught about the birth of abstraction and the development of abstraction over time. It's written from a very European and European-American male centric perspective, and that is simply only part of a global history.
So, Quiet Strength is meant to recognize the unique strength that I see in women and is meant to extend that recognition beyond our human female relatives, to also recognize our common relative - our common mother - the earth, the land that supports us that gives us everything we need to live, to survive, to thrive and everything that we need to practice our artistic expressions. The colors that are in these paintings reference various materials, both in, native and non-native art forms and ways that we have practiced abstraction over time. So they reference porcupine quills. They reference plant fibers. They reference glass beads. They reference stone. They reference turquoise. They reference copper and gold. And all of these things are materials that are our gifts from the land.

Hola, mi nombre es Dyani White Hawk y estoy aquí para hablarles sobre la exhibición Hablando con Familiares.
Además de rechazar las jerarquías impuestas y cómo esas jerarquías han honrado ciertos materiales artísticos y las personas asociadas con ellos y han devaluado o excluido otros materiales artísticos y las personas asociadas con ellos, el trabajo también tiene como objetivo rechazar la forma en que vemos y comprender que los atributos humanos y las formas en que también están asociados con personas y vidas específicas. El título, Fortaleza Serena, y toda la serie pretenden honrar estas contribuciones artísticas de las mujeres a la historia de la abstracción.
Entonces, se está rindiendo homenaje específicamente a las mujeres Lakota y sus contribuciones a la historia del arte porque eso es fundamental para los puntos de entrada en la creación de arte, cómo me criaron y quién yo entiendo que soy. También busca rendir homenaje a las mujeres indígenas en general y sus contribuciones a la abstracción, a los pueblos indígenas en general sus contribuciones a la abstracción, y a las mujeres y sus contribuciones a la abstracción, porque todos esos grupos han sido subestimados en la forma en que la Se han escrito y enseñado narraciones sobre el nacimiento de la abstracción y el desarrollo de la abstracción a lo largo del tiempo. Está escrito desde una perspectiva muy europea y europea-estadounidense centrada en los hombres, y eso es solo una parte de una historia global.
Entonces, Fortaleza Serena se enfoca en reconocer la fuerza única que veo en las mujeres y pretende extender ese reconocimiento más allá de nuestras parientes humanas femeninas, para reconocer también a nuestro pariente común, nuestra madre común, la tierra, la tierra que nos sostiene que da nosotros todo lo que necesitamos para vivir, sobrevivir, prosperar y todo lo que necesitamos para practicar nuestras expresiones artísticas. Los colores que se encuentran en estas pinturas hacen referencia a varios materiales, tanto en formas de arte nativas como no nativas y formas en que hemos practicado la abstracción a lo largo del tiempo. Entonces hacen referencia a las púas de puercoespín. Hacen referencia a las fibras vegetales. Hacen referencia a perlas de vidrio. Hacen referencia a la piedra. Hacen referencia al turquesa. Hacen referencia al cobre y al oro. Y todas estas cosas son materiales que son nuestros regalos de la tierra.
