Hello, my name is Clarissa Tossin and I am here to talk about my exhibition, Falling From Earth.
I think when we talk about climate change, sometimes it's so hard to grasp what that means because we are talking about changes at the planetary level. So how do we get to examples that really speak to our lived experience, our everyday life?
For example, Death by Heatwave, which is the big tree that takes over the whole gallery, a sycamore tree that has been dying in the Mulhouse forest in France. And what happens is that the soil is dried up due to the change in the summer temperatures of that region, and the tree can't handle to survive throughout the summer with really low moisture in the soil, or at least it's low for this specific species.
So we start seeing clusters of dry trees in this local forest. And the same happened with the peach tree, which is hung upside down in another gallery. And it's a tree from my backyard in Los Angeles. So during a very hot summer, this tree did not survive. And by doing this gesture of casting the body of that tree and making it into an artwork is a way of making it visible.
It's just one small example of the kind of changes that we might see due to climate change. And I hope that my work just opens conversation.

Hola. Mi nombre es Clarissa Tossin y estoy aquí para hablar sobre mi exposición Falling from Earth (Cayendo desde la Tierra).
Creo que cuando hablamos de cambio climático a veces es muy difícil entender lo que eso significa porque estamos hablando de cambios a nivel planetario. Entonces, ¿cómo obtenemos dos ejemplos que realmente se adhieren a nuestras vidas y experimentan nuestra vida cotidiana? Hasta ahora, un ejemplo es de Heatwave (Ola de Calor), que es el gran árbol que se apodera de toda la Galería, un árbol sicómoro que ha estado muriendo en Foresting Friends. Lo que sucede es que el suelo se seca debido al cambio de las temperaturas de verano en esa región y el árbol no puede soportar sobrevivir todo este verano con muy poca humedad en el suelo. Está sucediendo para esta especie específica, por lo que puede comenzar a ver grupos de árboles secos en este bosque local.
Y lo mismo pasó con el Peachtree (Duraznero), que está colgado boca abajo en otra galería y es un árbol de mi patio trasero en Los Ángeles. Durante un verano muy caluroso, ese árbol no sobrevivió y hacer este gesto de moldear el cuerpo del árbol muerto y convertirlo en una obra de arte es una forma de hacerlo visible. Es solo un pequeño ejemplo del tipo de cambios que podríamos ver debido al cambio climático, y espero que mi trabajo abra esa conversación.
