Jack Balas:
We Will be Seeing You
June 3, 2008–September 7, 2008
Text
Concerned with the concept of bridging opposing and diverse ideas, Jack Balas’s work incorporates painting and photography, among other media. Balas creates "maps" and "chronicles" that open the door to exploratory study and connections. For Jack Balas: We Will Be Seeing You, the artist selected a group of individuals whose portraits he would create. The project grew as these individuals then selected the next group of subjects, who subsequently did the same. Balas explores the connections and relationships between these individuals, and the result is a progressive and participatory roadmap of individual and collective portraits that invites us to travel along or to find our own path.
Jack Balas was born in 1955. He received his BFA and MFA from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb. He is a recipient of fellowships from the Colorado Council on the Arts and from the National Endowment for the Arts. Balas has exhibited widely, including at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts, Arizona; University of Wyoming Art Museum, Laramie; and the Tucson Museum of Art, Arizona, among others.
