Patti Hallock:
The West is Here
January 19, 2013–March 3, 2013
Text
Patti Hallock: The West is Here presented photographs of the American West that are both haunting and thought-provoking. Hallock's scenes move from expansive landscapes that convey a sense of possibility and mystery to tightly composed images focusing on details of a particular site. Collectively, her work suggests the aftermath of an adventure; they document the ruins of the West, proposing that the landscape is a site of both progress and deterioration. In her treatment of this terrain, she pairs the resourcefulness of the setting with the depletion of those resources. A site of eminent potential ultimately is shown to be a site of the quiet collapse. A catalogue was published in conjunction with this exhibition and included an essay by Karen Brooks from the Petrie Institute of Western American Art at the Denver Art Museum.
Patti Hallock received her BFA in photography from the University of Colorado at Denver and her MFA in photography from Parsons, The New School for Design, New York City. She works digitally and with medium and large format film. Her work is in both public and private collections and has been exhibited in the United States, Europe, and Asia.
