Out of this World is a selection of surrealist films that feature altered perceptions of the world around us: whether through humor, travel, mind-altering substances, daydreams, madness, or love. The series features films from important and influential figures in Mexican cinema, including Arturo Ripstein, María Novaro, and Gerando Naranjo, as well as cinema pioneers Sergei Eisenstein and Luis Buñuel, among many others, this series explores how getting out of the world, at least symbolically, also gives us the opportunity to recreate and re-imagine it.
El Ángel Exterminador (The Exterminating Angel)(1962) is a surrealist comedy-drama that tells the story of a group of high society guests who are unable to leave a room after a dinner party. Despite being physically able to, they are trapped by a mysterious and unexplainable force. As the days pass and their situation becomes increasingly desperate, they begin to turn on each other and their civilized veneers break down. The film explores themes of class, social conformity, and the subconscious mind. El Ángel Exterminador is widely considered a masterpiece of Surrealist cinema and continues to be highly regarded by critics and film enthusiasts.
Luis Buñuel was a Spanish-Mexican film director and screenwriter who was born in Calanda, Spain in 1900. He is widely considered one of the most important and influential filmmakers of the 20th century. Buñuel began his career in France, where he was part of the Surrealist movement and made several influential films, including the landmark Surrealist film Un Chien Andalou. He later moved to Mexico, where he continued to make films that were noted for their use of dreamlike imagery and their exploration of sexuality, religion, and the subconscious. Some of Buñuel's most famous films include Belle de Jour, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, and That Obscure Object of Desire. Buñuel's work has had a major impact on the development of Surrealist and avant-garde cinema, and he is widely regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of all time.
Presented in Spanish with English subtitles.
