Cinema Azteca is an exciting new film series that will provide moviegoers with a diverse and dynamic perspective on the film traditions of Mexico and Latin America. Curated by artists, filmmakers, writers, and other cultural experts, Cinema Azteca will be presented weekly on Tuesday nights at the Holiday Theater.
Cinema Azteca launches March 21 with Out of this World, three months of films selected by Eduardo Sarabia and Lorena Peña Brito.
Out of this World is a selection of surrealist films that feature altered perceptions of the world around us: whether through humor, travel, mind-altering substances, daydreams, madness, or love. The series features films from important and influential figures in Mexican cinema, including Arturo Ripstein, María Novaro, and Gerando Naranjo, as well as cinema pioneers Sergei Eisenstein and Luis Buñuel, among many others, this series explores how getting out of the world, at least symbolically, also gives us the opportunity to recreate and re-imagine it.
Que Viva México (Long Live Mexico) was made in the early 1930s by legendary filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein and was intended to be a feature-length documentary about the beauty and richness of Mexican culture, history, and traditions. However, due to various difficulties, the film was never completed and only fragments of the footage have been preserved. Despite this, "Que Viva Mexico!" remains a significant work in the history of cinema and a testament to Eisenstein's innovative vision and artistic talent.
Sergei Eisenstein was a pioneering Soviet film director and film theoretician, widely regarded as one of the most influential filmmakers of the 20th century. He was born in Riga, Latvia in 1898 and began his career in theater before turning to film. Eisenstein's innovations in montage, or the editing of shots to convey meaning, were groundbreaking and continue to influence filmmakers today. His films, including "Battleship Potemkin" and "October: Ten Days That Shook the World," are considered masterpieces of Soviet cinema and are noted for their innovative use of editing and visual effects to tell powerful stories of revolution and social change. Eisenstein's ideas on film form and content, as well as his belief in the power of film as a political tool, had a major impact on the development of the art form.
Presented in Spanish and Russian with English subtitles.
