Cinema Azteca is an exciting new film series that will provide moviegoers with a diverse and dynamic perspective on the film traditions of Mexico and Latin America. Curated by artists, filmmakers, writers, and other cultural experts, Cinema Azteca will be presented weekly on Tuesday nights at the Holiday Theater.

Cinema Azteca launched March 21 with Out of this World, three months of films selected by Eduardo Sarabia and Lorena Peña Brito.

Out of this World is a selection of surrealist films that feature altered perceptions of the world around us: whether through humor, travel, mind-altering substances, daydreams, madness, or love. The series features films from important and influential figures in Mexican cinema, including Arturo Ripstein, María Novaro, and Gerando Naranjo, as well as cinema pioneers Sergei Eisenstein and Luis Buñuel, among many others, this series explores how getting out of the world, at least symbolically, also gives us the opportunity to recreate and re-imagine it.

Eisenstein en Guanajuato (Eisenstein in Guanajuato) (2015) is a captivating biographical drama that explores the life and work of legendary Soviet filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein. Directed by Peter Greenaway, this film takes you on a journey through Eisenstein's time in Guanajuato, Mexico as he creates one of his most famous works, ¡Que viva México!. With stunning cinematography and powerful performances, Eisenstein in Guanajuato offers a unique perspective on the life of a master filmmaker and the birth of a cinematic masterpiece.

Peter Greenaway is a British film director, screenwriter, and multimedia artist. He was born in 1942 in Newport, Wales. Greenaway is best known for his unconventional and often controversial films, which often explore themes of death, sex, and the deconstruction of narrative. He has directed numerous feature films and shorts and is regarded as one of the most innovative and important filmmakers of his generation. Some of his most famous works include The Draughtsman's Contract (1982), The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989), and Prospero's Books (1991).
