A car stops at the curb without turning the engine off. The blinkers flash. A woman gets out of the driver’s seat & steps around the car to the passenger’s side rear door & opens it. The woman reaches a hand into the car & helps her aged grandmother extract herself from the back seat of a car. The granddaughter then opens the trunk, pulls out a metal folding chair & sets up the chair on the far side of the sidewalk. The grandmother sits & the granddaughter gets back in the car & drives away. Another car stops & idles. A young man gets out of the driver’s seat & trots over to the front passenger seat & helps an older woman out of the seat. As she leans on the car, he retrieves a wooden folding chair from the trunk & sets it up beside the woman in the metal folding chair. Then he takes the older woman’s hand & carefully helps her walk over to the wooden chair. As she gets situated, he stands attentively. When she is all set up, the young man gets back in his car & drives off. The two older women nod to one another & smile, then sit patiently. Another older woman walks up, carrying a folding chair. She sets up her chair beside the two & greets them politely. Another car stops & another older woman steps out. She opens the rear door & pulls a folding chair out & a cushion. Then she looks over to the other women & reaches back into the car & pulls out three more cushions. As the car drives away & the driver toots the horn, the woman distributes the extra cushions to the other women on the folding chairs, then sets up her own folding chair & gets comfy. The four women look up into the sky to the west as the sun drops down behind the far mountains, spreading wide washes of bright orange & pink across the sky, then the light fades & darkness fills the shy. One of the women turns to you & motions for you to come sit with them, so you pick up a nearby milk crate & carry it over & sit with the four. A few lights spring up out of the darkness, twitching & shimmering. Then more lights. At first you think the lights must be stars, but as you watch, more & more lights fill the sky, until the whole night sky is full of shimmering, quivering lights. The lights grow brighter. They are moving closer. A few of the closest lights get close enough for you to make out their bulbous tops & dangling tendrils, all aglow. The lights are jellyfish. A great mass of glowing jellyfish are migrating across the night sky.
