Hello, my name's Guadalupe Maravilla. I'm an artist, and this is my exhibition Purring Monsters With Mirrors On Their Backs.
So the name Disease Thrower it's inspired by my mythology. And a lot of the deities in Central America are these fierce deities, right? And they're the protectors. So I was really thinking of a name. I wanted them to have a really fierce name and because they, to me, they're disease throwers. They're there to dismantle any type of illness, whether it's physical, or mental health, or just get rid of all the toxicity. Right? So I want a really powerful name, and I came up with Disease Thrower.
Disease Thrower: Purring Monster With A Mirror On Its Back. It has a lot of elements. And like I mentioned before, these objects are collected from retracing my own immigration route. And there's literally a mirror on its back. And this mirror is actually a 1950s bicycle that I found in the market in Mexico City.
I have a long history with mirrors growing up. My grandmother used to talk to me and tell me that if lightning hits the house, then that mirror can become a portal and different types of energies can enter the house. So we often cover them. And that's really what influenced the name of the exhibition, Purring Monsters With Mirrors On Their Backs.
Also in this sculpture, there are these braided palms. The braiding is a big part of a lot of the work that I do. A lot of indigenous women, my ancestors, had long braids and I always associate the braiding or any braiding that happens with my grandmothers and other ancestors.

El nombre Disease Thrower (Lanzador de Enfermedades) está inspirado en mi mitología. Y muchas de las deidades en América Central son estas deidades feroces, ¿verdad? Ellos son los protectores. Así que realmente estaba pensando en un nombre. Quería que tuvieran un nombre realmente feroz y porque, para mí, son lanzadores de enfermedades. Están ahí para desmantelar cualquier tipo de enfermedad, ya sea de salud física o mental, o simplemente deshacerse de toda la toxicidad. ¿Verdad? Así que quiero un nombre realmente poderoso, y se me ocurrió Lanzador de Enfermedades.
Lanzador de Enfermedades: Monstruos ronroneantes con un espejo en la espalda. Tiene muchos elementos. Estos objetos se recopilan al volver sobre mi propia ruta de inmigración. Y hay literalmente un espejo en su espalda. Y este espejo es en realidad una bicicleta de los años 50 que encontré en el mercado de la Ciudad de México.
Tengo una larga historia con los espejos mientras crecía. Mi abuela solía hablarme y decirme que, si cae un rayo en la casa, entonces ese espejo puede convertirse en un portal y diferentes tipos de energías pueden entrar a la casa. Así que a menudo los cubrimos. Y eso es realmente lo que influyó en el nombre de la exposición, Monstruos ronroneantes con un espejo en la espalda.
También en esta escultura, están estas palmas trenzadas. El trenzado es una gran parte de mucho del trabajo que hago. Muchas mujeres indígenas, mis ancestros, tenían trenzas largas y yo siempre asocio el trenzado o cualquier trenzado que se haga con mis abuelas y otros ancestros.
