Text
MCA Denver's exhibition of Jeff Starr showcased the artist's return to painting after several years of experimentation in sculpture. Starr’s oeuvre includes movie star portraits, representations of tree stumps, and sculpted heads of young artists and musicians. References to human habitations, as seen in his paintings for MCA Denver, are new subject matter for Starr. He combines realistic and imagined occupied terrain, resulting in a surrealistic built environment that is distinctly his own – located somewhere between reality and fantasy.
Jeff Starr was born in 1956. He has had numerous exhibitions throughout the Western United States and has been the recipient of several grants, including a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artist Fellowship Grant. He currently lives and works in Denver.
