MCA DENVER’S VIRTUAL AFTERNOON SALOON IS THURSDAY AT 4PM!
You’re invited to join us for a special Halloween Edition of Afternoon Saloon edition on Thursday, October 29, 2020 from 4 – 4:30PM with special guest Miranda Lash, MCA Denver’s Ellen Bruss Senior Curator!
What’s Afternoon Saloon? It’s sort of like an old fashioned salon where people like artists, makers, and creators gather to engage in some meaningful, educational discussions. We’ve taken that concept and (we think) made it more fun by turning that salon into a saloon and featuring a cool Denver bartender too. So, let’s drink and get smart together.
This week’s Afternoon Saloon will be teaming up with Ship Tavern located in the Brown Palace Hotel. Ship Tavern opened in 1934 after the repeal of prohibition, making it the oldest restaurant in the Brown Palace hotel. The décor includes a complete mast and crow’s nest, an old ship’s clock, Jamaican rum barrels, and a collection of sailing ship models of the former hotel owner, acquired on a visit to Cape Cod. Ship Tavern bartender, Charles Smith will be teaching us how to make the Fish House Punch while also telling us some ghost stories about the Tavern and Hotel. You can find details about how to make this frightfully delicious drink below.
Once we have our boos in hand, members will meet and ask questions of our new Ellen Bruss Senior Curator, Miranda Lash.
Miranda Lash’s curatorial work consistently brings attention to work by women, LGBTQ-identifying artists, and artists of color. She has a long resume, assembling more than 30 museum exhibitions over her career, including showcases of established names, ranging from Mel Chin to Rashaad Newsome to the late Bruce Conner.
Lash received her BA in art history and architecture from Harvard University and her MA in art history from Williams College. Miranda Lash was the New Orleans Museum of Art’s first curator of modern and contemporary art before working as the curator of Contemporary Art for the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky. She’s deeply involved in the curatorial field as a researcher and writer with essays appearing in numerous journals, and she serves on the board of the influential Joan Mitchell Foundation based in New York.
Don’t ghost this event, because members in attendance are eligible to enter to win a treat (no tricks)!
Our Afternoon Saloon is always free for our members, but we would love for you to reserve your ticket below to join us in the saloon on Thursday, October 29, 2020 from 4 – 4:30PM.
