Cinema Azteca is an exciting new film series that will provide moviegoers with a diverse and dynamic perspective on the film traditions of Mexico and Latin America. Curated by artists, filmmakers, writers, and other cultural experts, Cinema Azteca will be presented weekly on Tuesday nights at the Holiday Theater. 

Cinema Azteca launched March 21 with Out of this World, three months of films selected by Eduardo Sarabia and Lorena Peña Brito.

Out of this World is a selection of surrealist films that feature altered perceptions of the world around us: whether through humor, travel, mind-altering substances, daydreams, madness, or love. The series features films from important and influential figures in Mexican cinema, including Arturo Ripstein, María Novaro, and Gerando Naranjo, as well as cinema pioneers Sergei Eisenstein and Luis Buñuel, among many others, this series explores how getting out of the world, at least symbolically, also gives us the opportunity to recreate and re-imagine it.

Esto no es Berlín (This is Not Berlin) is a Mexican coming-of-age film directed by Hari Sama. It is set in the late 1980s and follows the story of a young man named Carlos who, after being exposed to the vibrant countercultural music and art scene in Mexico City, begins to question his sexuality and identity. The film is a nostalgic and immersive look at the cultural revolution that took place in Mexico during that time and explores themes of youth, creativity, and the search for self-expression. With its pulsing soundtrack, dreamlike cinematography, and powerful performances, Esto no es Berlín is a journey into the heart of a revolutionary time.

Hari Sama is a Mexican film director, screenwriter, and producer. He was born in Mexico City and has been active in the film industry since the early 2000s. Sama is known for his distinctive and innovative style, which blends elements of social realism and magical realism. He has received recognition for his work, including several awards and nominations at film festivals in Mexico and around the world. Another of his notable films is Kertu. Sama is considered to be one of the leading voices in Mexican cinema and is known for his ability to tackle complex social and political issues through his films.

Cinema Azteca es una emocionante nueva serie de cine que ofrecerá a los espectadores una perspectiva diversa y dinámica en torno a las tradiciones cinemáticas de México y América Latina. Fuera de este mundo es una selección de películas surrealistas que muestran percepciones alteradas del mundo a nuestro alrededor: ya sea a través del humor, el viaje, sustancias que alteran la consciencia, ensoñaciones, la locura o el amor. La serie presenta películas de figuras importantes e influyentes del cine mexicano, incluyendo a Arturo Ripstein, María Novaro y Gerardo Naranjo, así como películas de los pioneros del cine Sergei Eisenstein y Luis Buñuel, entre muchos otros, esta serie explora cómo salir de este mundo, al menos simbólicamente, nos otorga la oportunidad de recrearlo y re-imaginarlo. 

Esto no es Berlín es una película mexicana sobre la mayoría de edad dirigida por Hari Sama. Está ambientada a fines de la década de 1980 y sigue la historia de un joven llamado Carlos que, después de estar expuesto à la vibrante escena musical y artística contracultural en la Ciudad de México, comienza a cuestionar su sexualidad e identidad. La película es una mirada nostálgica e inmersiva à la revolución cultural que tuvo lugar en México durante ese tiempo y explora temas de juventud, creatividad y la búsqueda de la autoexpresión. Con su vibrante banda sonora, cinematografía de ensueño y poderosas actuaciones, Esto no es Berlín es un viaje al corazón de una época revolucionaria.

Hari Sama es un director, guionista y productor de cine mexicano. Nació en la Ciudad de México y ha estado activo en la industria del cine desde principios de la década de 2000. Sama es conocido por su estilo distintivo e innovador, que combina elementos de realismo social y realismo mágico. Ha recibido reconocimiento por su trabajo, incluyendo varios premios y nominaciones en festivales de cine en México y alrededor del mundo. Otra de sus películas destacadas es Kertu. Sama es considerado una de las principales voces del cine mexicano y es conocido por su capacidad para abordar complejos temas sociales y políticos a través de sus películas.
