Cinema Azteca is an exciting new film series that will provide moviegoers with a diverse and dynamic perspective on the film traditions of Mexico and Latin America. Curated by artists, filmmakers, writers, and other cultural experts, Cinema Azteca will be presented weekly on Tuesday nights at the Holiday Theater. 

Cinema Azteca launched March 21 with Out of this World, three months of films selected by Eduardo Sarabia and Lorena Peña Brito.

Out of this World is a selection of surrealist films that feature altered perceptions of the world around us: whether through humor, travel, mind-altering substances, daydreams, madness, or love. The series features films from important and influential figures in Mexican cinema, including Arturo Ripstein, María Novaro, and Gerando Naranjo, as well as cinema pioneers Sergei Eisenstein and Luis Buñuel, among many others, this series explores how getting out of the world, at least symbolically, also gives us the opportunity to recreate and re-imagine it.

El lugar sin límites (The Place Without Limits) tells the story of a small town filled with characters seeking to fulfill their desires, which often leads them down dangerous paths. The film explores themes of sexuality, power, and the darker side of human nature. Set in a timeless and surreal world, El lugar sin límites is a haunting and powerful journey into the unknown, where anything is possible and the boundaries of morality are pushed to the limit.

Arturo Ripstein is a Mexican film director and producer known for his contributions to Mexican and Latin American cinema. He was born in Mexico City in 1943 and has been a major figure in the Mexican film industry for over five decades. Ripstein is known for his distinct style, which blends elements of film noir, melodrama, and social realism. He has received numerous awards and recognition for his work, including several Ariel Awards, the Mexican Academy’s equivalent of the Oscars. Some of his notable films include Deep Crimson, The Chambermaid on the Titanic, and Such is Life. Ripstein is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential filmmakers in the history of Mexican cinema.

Cinema Azteca es una emocionante nueva serie de cine que ofrecerá a los espectadores una perspectiva diversa y dinámica en torno a las tradiciones cinemáticas de México y América Latina. Fuera de este mundo es una selección de películas surrealistas que muestran percepciones alteradas del mundo a nuestro alrededor: ya sea a través del humor, el viaje, sustancias que alteran la consciencia, ensoñaciones, la locura o el amor. La serie presenta películas de figuras importantes e influyentes del cine mexicano, incluyendo a Arturo Ripstein, María Novaro y Gerardo Naranjo, así como películas de los pioneros del cine Sergei Eisenstein y Luis Buñuel, entre muchos otros, esta serie explora cómo salir de este mundo, al menos simbólicamente, nos otorga la oportunidad de recrearlo y re-imaginarlo. 

El lugar sin límites cuenta la historia de un pequeño pueblo lleno de personajes que buscan cumplir sus deseos, lo que a menudo los lleva por caminos peligrosos. La película explora temas de sexualidad, poder y el lado más oscuro de la naturaleza humana. Ambientado en un mundo atemporal y surrealista, El lugar sin límites es un viaje inquietante y poderoso hacia lo desconocido, donde todo es posible y los límites de la moralidad se llevan al límite.
