Octopus Initiative Artist Molly Bounds

Molly Bounds is a printmaker and illustrator. Through portraiture, and a confident though economic use of line, Bounds’ scenes of domestic life often depict the complexity of her figures’ private thought processes. Heavily influenced by abstract storytelling within alternative comics and zines, Bounds captures quiet moments that suggest internal conflict, urgency, complacency, or fleeting opportunity. Her work often scrutinizes the social conditioning of self-doubt and its effect on the perception of one’s abilities. She aims to emulate others who have used zines as a forum of dissemination of subjective experience, in order to voice stories which are rarely shared in normative culture.

Bounds was born in 1990 in Lewisville, Texas, and raised in Colorado. She currently resides in Los Angeles. She received her BFA in printmaking from Metropolitan State University of Denver in 2014. She was an artist in residence at Redline Contemporary Art Center from 2016 to 2018, and has exhibited widely throughout Denver, California, and the Southwest including at MCA Denver, RULE Gallery in Marfa, Texas, Athen B. Gallery in Oakland and pt. 2: Oakland.
