Curated by Cydney Payton, Executive Director & Chief Curator

MCA Denver thanks the citizens of the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District.

Trevor Appleson brings a unique approach to photography by providing an antidote to the artificiality of the studio. To create his photographs, Appleson, a self-taught photographer, sets up an open-air studio with a simple black screen, working with natural sunlight at dawn or dusk. His photographs at MCA Denver consisted of images of the popular sensational entertainment called lucha libre and of still lifes. In Appleson’s exhibition, Mexican wrestlers (luchadores) and common objects portray a familiar yet unusual side of Mexico City. Appleson invites his subjects’ active participation to make the work immediate and authentic. This series is on view for the first time in the US at MCA Denver.

Trevor Appleson was born in South Africa. He has been awarded grants from the Shifting Foundation, the Experimental Television Center, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He has exhibited widely, both in the UK and internationally at the Artrock at Rockefeller Centre, New York; Jerwood Foundation, London; and the Evangelos Averoff-Tositsas Foundation, Greece, among others. He lives and works in London.
