Decorate your own sugar skull in this teen workshop hosted in collaboration with the Latino Cultural Arts Center. Ages 13 – 18.

This free event is for ages 13 – 18. Parents and guardians are welcome to visit the galleries or the rooftop café during the event.

Hosted at the Museum of Contemporary Art, join the Latino Cultural Arts Center as you decorate your very own sugar skull in remembrance of a loved one. Sugar skulls are traditionally placed on altars or at cemetery graves during the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) celebration. This Mexican craft involves creating intricately designed skulls made from sugar, serving as offerings to honor deceased loved ones.

The workshop will start with a grounding exercise led by a mental health provider, followed by the art activity guided by the art facilitator. Participants will also be asked to complete a survey to provide feedback on the workshop. All supplies and materials will be provided, along with a light snack and refreshments.

How to Display and Enjoy:

Place your finished sugar skulls on an altar or display them in your home as part of your Day of the Dead celebration. Remember, decorating sugar skulls is a creative and personal process, so feel free to experiment with different designs, colors, and techniques to make them uniquely.
