Candice Breitz
OCTOBER 28, 2007-MARCH 2, 2008

Breitz's thirty-channel video installation LEGEND had its United States premiere at MCA Denver. LEGEND exposes the duality of Bob Marley's image as an international icon and as an advocate for social justice. Breitz worked with thirty Jamaicans based on their connection to Marley to perform their version of the Legend album a cappella in its entirety. A cacophony comes together, in the artist's words, "[to] return the album to Jamaica." The installation was first exhibited at the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston, Jamaica, further demonstrating the commitment to the empowerment of the Jamaican culture.

Candice Breitz was born in South Africa in 1972 and currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany. She has exhibited at Modern Art Oxford, United Kingdom; O.K. Center for Contemporary Art, Linz, Austria; Hamburger Kunsthalle, Germany; New Museum for Contemporary Art, New York, NY. Her work has been included in biennials in Johannesburg, South Africa; Taipei, Taiwan; Kwangju, Korea; Venice, Italy; Istanbul, Turkey; and Sao Paolo, Brazil.
